6.6 Safeguarding Policies, Templates and Training

Everything you need to know about safeguarding at Catalpa

What is safeguarding? Safeguarding means protecting peoples' health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect.Safeguarding covers two areas: Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) and Child Safeguarding (CS). This means protecting people, particularly children and vulnerable adults, from harm that arises from engaging with our staff or programs.

How is safeguarding different to protection? "Safeguarding" relates to keeping people safe from the actions and personnel of Catalpa (i.e. through our policies and practices), and is a subset of "protection" which relates to keeping people safe from situations and actions that occur in the wider community (i.e. through our projects which could address those situations or actions). Safeguarding is therefore related to the internal business of Catalpa.

What do you need to know about safeguarding? You need to be familiar with Catalpa's two safeguarding policies (PSEAH and Child Safeguarding), have undertaken Catalpa's orientation training regarding safeguarding and annual refresher training; training and procedure about story-gathering (collecting, using, and storing images and stories); and templates you might find useful i.e. reporting posters and templates for due diligence with subcontractors.
